Anti Malaria
Prevention is better than cure!
Many countries have insects which pose a threat to travellers. Malaria is a blood disease caused by a bite from the insect mosquito. Whilst anti-malaria tablets can reduce the risk of catching malaria they are not 100% effective, so it is essential that you also take steps to avoid being bitten. Therefore follow these simple guidelines.
Avoid being bitten by using an insect repellent containing 30% DEET. Lemon and eucalyptus oil on the skin also repels insects. If your accommodation does not have insect screens or windows which close, sleep under a mosquito net. Wear long sleeve clothes and socks if you go out after sunset.
Start anti-malarial tablets one week before; all during your stay and four weeks after leaving the malaria zone.
Remember if you develop fever or febrile symptoms several months after return from a malaria zone, see a doctor and ask if you may have malaria.
In pregnancy travel to malarial zones should be avoided. If travel is unavoidable anti-malaria drugs must be taken but check with your doctor that the drugs recommended for the area you are travelling to are suitable for you.
Please confirm with your doctor the anti-malaria drugs required for the malaria zone you are visiting.
Please remember that anti-malaria drugs may react with other drugs such as anti-epileptics, amiodarone, warfarin and digoxin that you may be taking for other conditions. It is important that your doctor confirms that you are able to take anti-malaria drugs with these drugs.
